About this Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of "Notes from Amicus", our first newsletter. We have a grand vision for "Notes from Amicus", so grand in fact, that we realised we were not getting on with it. So what you are reading is a humble beginning. In future editions, look for transformations in appearance and content. We'll be sharing news about unsung heros in the classical music scene, gifted music teachers and performers, places to hear classical music in Greater Vancouver (from restaurants, homes and community centres to concert halls), and of course interesting trivia about music in general.

Our Vision

The Amicus Music Duo creates and delivers Musical Occasions designed to foster Connections:

  • personal connections for each listener with music.
  • connections between the listener, the composer and the musician.

We foster these connections in new and fresh ways that express what music is for us, and who the audience is:

  • Creative and thoughtful: our selection of music is both well researched and well loved.
  • Unique and intimate: our performance spaces are as familiar as your home, as comfortable as your favourite armchair; we select environments that evoke the ease and simple beauty of music while removing any sense of the 'untouchable' or 'unapproachable'.
  • Engaging and inclusive: new ways of thinking about music are suggested, and stories of universal appeal inspire this much-sought after connection between listener, music, musician and composer.
  • Welcoming and beautiful: new listeners - who might be daunted by the prospect of attending a mainly classical concert - and music enthusiasts alike are invited to settle in for an enjoyable and dazzling music event.

Call for Venues

We need your help.
Amicus is looking for intimate and comfortable venues suitable for performances. Our first choice is a real home, but don't rule out any room you see with the following features.

  • Room for 10-30 people seated comfortably - no cramming - good leg room and elbow room required.
  • Comfortable seats - we want our audience to be engaging with the music, not their sore back or "you know what".
  • A good quality piano on site - preferrably a grand piano, but some uprights are suitable.
  • Minimal or no street noise.
  • Good acoustics - look for these features: high ceilings. Stone, hardwood, concrete, or tile flooring. (Excessive amounts of carpeting and upholstery can seriously reduce the sound and quality of the musical instruments.)

Commissions

Craig was recently commissioned to compose Eitan's Waltz. Eitan's grandfather was inspired by the soothing yet engaging qualities of Amicus Music Duo's Purple Patches CD. Knowing that his grandson loved to go to sleep to beautiful music, most particularly a waltz, he commissioned Craig to compose a waltz just for Eitan.

Do you have a landmark event or moment coming up in the life of a colleague or loved one? Consider honouring it with an original composition and performance at the event. Contact Amicus if this appeals to you.
